From 7 to 11 October, the High School of Public Governance hosted a training programme on ‘Transitional Justice: Goals and Mechanisms’.

The purpose of the training was to master the legal framework and mechanisms of transitional justice based on international human rights law, humanitarian and criminal law, as well as refugee law.

The event was attended by representatives of Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson and Kharkiv regions. The participants reviewed the process of forming a register of damages caused by the russian aggression against Ukraine, focusing on the main tasks and categories of applications. They also discussed the practical aspects of developing a national mechanism for recording information on damage to personal non-property rights caused by the aggression.

The trainers Natalia Hendel, Lyudmyla Huseynova and Olena Lazareva reviewed international experience in applying the concept of transitional justice, including an analysis of practices used in other countries. Particular attention was paid to the experience of implementing the Pilot Project on Providing Interim Immediate Reparations to Victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence in Ukraine and Preventing and Combating CRSV.

This training was made possible with the support of the National Training Centre on Preventing and Combating Domestic and Gender-Based Violence.

Conducting such training is extremely important both in the context of mastering and applying the norms of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law and international refugee law, and ensuring the right of society to the truth about the armed conflict.
