Educational series «Ukrainian Heroes and Heroines: From Past to Present»

The series was created by the National Agency of Ukraine for Civil Service jointly with the Higher School of Public Administration with the support of UN Women in Ukraine.

Purpose:

  • to understand the history of nation and state building in Ukraine through the prism of the activities of famous personalities,
  • to use the potential of historical heritage in patriotic education,
  • to shape perceptions of the civilizational affiliation of Ukrainians and Ukraine’s historical involvement in European development trends,
  • to strengthen the security component of national memory,
  • to strengthen national unity and consolidate Ukrainian society.

Expected outcome:

to deepen knowledge of the personified history of nation and state building in Ukraine.

Series I. «The Princes’ Era: The Origins of Statehood» – about the deeds of Princess Olga, Princes Sviatoslav, Volodymyr, Yaroslav, Anna Yaroslavna, who became Queen of France, and King Danylo Romanovych of Rus.

Series II. «The Cossack Era» – about the role of prominent representatives of the Cossack era in the development of Ukrainian state-building and cultural traditions: Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny, Petro Doroshenko, Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Ivan Mazepa, Feodosia Paliy, Halshka Hulevychivna.

Series III. «The Formation of the Modern Ukrainian Nation (19th Century)» about cultural, political, and public figures who worked to revive Ukrainian identity, develop national consciousness, and fought for the rights of Ukrainians under imperial oppression: Mykola Kostomarov, Lesya Ukrainka, and Nataliya Kobrynska.

Series IV. «The Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921: The Hrushevsky Family» – about the outstanding intellectual and statesman Mykhailo Hrushevsky, his wife, public figure and educator Maria Hrushevska, and their daughter, researcher of Ukrainian history, folklore collector, and editor of scientific publications Kateryna Hrushevska.

Series V. «Outstanding Figures of the OUN-UPA Period» – about the lives and activities of Yevhen Konovalets, Kateryna Zaritska, Iryna Kozak-Savytska, and Vasyl Ivakhiv.

Series VI. «Personalities of the Resistance Movement in Ukraine (1960-1990)» – about representatives of the Shistdesiatnyky (Sixties) – creative personalities who expressed moral opposition to the totalitarian state regime: artist, human rights activist, and public figure Stefania Shabatura and poet and journalist Vasyl Symonenko.

Series VII. «Outstanding Women in Nation and State Building» – about Shefika Gasprynska, whose name is closely associated with the spread of ideas of emancipation, enlightenment, and women’s rights in Crimea, as well as Olena Stepaniv, a standard-bearer of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, a captain in the Ukrainian Galician Army, and a scientist.

Series VIII. «With Ukraine in their hearts: the contribution of representatives of the emigration to the processes of statehood» – about people whose activities became a catalyst for social change: Milena Rudnytska and Bohdan Hawrylyshyn.

Series IX. «Gaining Independence» – about Oksana Meshko and Levko Lukyanenko, who, together with their brothers and sisters, created the critical mass of Ukrainian spirit necessary for Ukraine to become an independent state in 1991.

Series X. «Heroes and Heroines of Our Time» – about Mustafa Dzhemilev, Oleksandra Matviychuk, Anastasia Shevchenko, and Andriana Susak-Arekhta – extraordinary personalities for whom the desire for freedom and independence of Ukraine is one of the defining values, and those who gave their lives in the struggle for these values – Volodymyr Rybak and Oleg Yurchenko.
